An Illinois roofing contractor who still owes $31,163 in outstanding workplace safety penalties has again been cited and hit with additional fines after the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration says its inspectors found the company continues to expose workers to fall hazards.
OSHA announced Tuesday that it cited Fairmont City-based JZ Exteriors and Repairs LLC for five repeat violations, four serious violations and one other-than-serious safety violation after inspectors visited a Greenville work site and found employees exposed to deadly fall dangers.
The employees, who were working on a roofing project at a commercial building in late April, were exposed to falls at heights up to 12 feet without adequate safety protection, according to OSHA.
Inspectors found that the contractor failed to properly use ladders, failed to provide proper fall protection and exposed workers to electrical hazards by not de-energizing circuits. OSHA said the company also failed to have a fire extinguisher on hand in case of emergencies.
OSHA said it cited the company for similar violations in Missouri in 2019 and in Highland, Illinois, last year.
The latest citations are accompanied by $66,711 in new proposed penalties.
The company has 15 business days to contest the latest citations and fine.
