A patient claims she suffered injuries, including sepsis, after her bowel was perforated during a hysterectomy.
Joyce Grace filed the complaint in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Protestant Memorial Medical Center, doing business as Memorial Hospital Shiloh, Dr. Kinsey Dinnel and Heartland Women’s Healthcare Ltd.
According to the complaint, Grace was in the defendants’ care on Nov. 3, 2020, for a laparoscopic hysterectomy. During the procedure, she claims they negligently and carelessly perforated her bowel. She also alleges the defendants failed to recognize or diagnose the bowel perforation in the operating room, failed to immediately repair the perforated bowel and failed to diagnose and treat the impending sepsis before discharging her from the hospital on Nov. 4, 2020.
As a result, Grace claims she sustained injuries including pneumonia, kidney failure and sepsis, which required additional surgeries. She also claims she has endured pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of a normal life, incurred medical expenses and lost earning capacity.
She seeks compensation in excess of $50,000, plus court costs.
